Embracing the Joy and Purpose of Homemaking: A Personal Journey of Rediscovery

If you had asked me in 2016 what I wanted to be in 5 years, I would have confidently said a world-traveling victim's advocate. Envisioning myself working on high-profile cases to support victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, I had grand aspirations. Life, however, had its own plans for me, leading me down an unexpected path of joy and purpose as a stay-at-home mom and homemaker.

When my daughter was placed into my arms in 2019, an undeniable shift occurred. My primary job became being with her, and no corporate position could lure me away from those precious hours every day. Despite embracing this new reality, I grappled with the societal expectations tied to traditional homemaking. The idea of finding purpose in seemingly mundane tasks, making sandwiches and staying still, challenged me. In an attempt to break away from this perceived confinement, I even opened a retail store, hoping to find a balance where my daughter could be with me. Little did I know that this venture would become one of our biggest challenges, coinciding with the world's sudden shutdown due to Covid. What felt like a failure at the time was, in reality, a lesson from God, guiding me toward the true purpose of being at home.

Society often perpetuates the notion that homemaking is oppressive and limits women's potential. These societal lies once clouded my perspective, making me question the significance of tasks like dusting and baking. However, through a personal journey of trials and tribulations, I've come to realize that true purpose comes from what God thinks, not societal norms.

In the midst of societal pressure, I've learned that nothing matters more than God and the people in your home—your spouse and children. In the corporate world, you can be easily replaced, but your role at home is irreplaceable. Home is not just a house; it's a sanctuary where you find comfort, share love, make memories, and grow. The details of creating a home, from the aroma of freshly baked bread to the warmth of snuggling babies at night, become a romanticized tapestry of life.

Why does society often view caring for our homes as secondary to careers? While jobs provide the means to afford a home, the process of making a home is a unique and invaluable journey. I've come to appreciate the difference between living in a house and creating a home, realizing that my true happiness lies in the latter.

Entering the third trimester of my pregnancy, I've found a deep love and purpose in homemaking. Despite not being the most aesthetic homemaker, I'm slowly developing our style and transforming our rental house into a home. Embracing simplicity within our space brings me peace, and I cherish the opportunity to create a nurturing environment for my growing family.

Shifting my mindset has been crucial in finding purpose in homemaking. Mundane tasks like washing dishes have transformed into moments of gratitude for the nutritious meals blessing my family. As I navigate the challenges of keeping up with laundry and cleaning bathrooms, I am continuously evolving in my homemaking journey.

Raised in a societal mindset that once made me believe I was born in the wrong era, I now understand that God has placed me in this time for a reason. I am here to remind other women that homemaking is a blessing, not a burden. I am here to help moms discover the joy in caring for their homes, realizing the profound impact it has on bringing peace to their families.

If you're struggling to find joy in homemaking, you're not alone. I promise to support you in any way I can, drawing inspiration from personal experiences like opening a retail store and finding peace in the comforting details of creating a home. Together, let's celebrate the joy and purpose of creating a loving and nurturing home for our families.
